Birmingham, AL – Topher LaRussa recently spent a week in Spain training with the youth academy of Sporting Gijon. He returned to training with ‘The Academy’ in Birmingham on Thursday evening where he was welcomed back by his ’03 teammates, all players and coaches.
The midfielder was identified and invited through ‘The Academy’s’ friendship and working relationship with Inaki Erana from the Asturius area club. Inaki has been to the U.S. to work with ‘The Academy’ in the past and both Carl Reynolds and Nigel Boulton have worked in Spain with Inaki.
Topher had a ‘wonderful experience’ said his father Frank who accompanied him ‘he was well looked after’. Asked about the trip and the biggest difference between his own team and the Spaniards he quickly responded ‘speed of play’.
