Meet our coaches

Carl is our Director of Player Development and head coach of the Stars, our NPSL minor league team. He is pictured here with Jordi Alba of Barcelona during the academy's tour to Europe.

As a player in England, Carl came through the academy system including at Chelsea, Reading, and Swindon. He arrived in the US to play in 2007 and became a two-time All-American at William Carey University. After college, he turned down an opportunity to play professionally in Honduras but did play for the successful Chattanooga FC in the NPSL.

Carl was also a graduate assistant at Carey after playing, before moving on to coach in Spain at La Liga club Sporting Gijon. He returned to the U.S. to take up a coaching role with the MLS New York Red Bulls academy where he was highly regarded.

In 2006 he returned to Hattiesburg to become a part of building Southern States Soccer into a regional power both on and off the field.

A Diverse Selection of Coaches and Experiences from Around The World and at home

Southern States Soccer is extremely proud of our coaching staff. We set high standards for our coaches and we believe they respect this as a part of their personal development. As much as our coaches help our kids by providing high-quality training sessions, we also assist our coaches in reaching their goals for the future.

We blend a wealth of experience from Nigel Boulton and Tony Marriel to novice coaches learning from those around them. We use a mentoring approach to learning.

Staff coaches Romar Smith and Cruz Rangel are the backbone of the program, competent at coaching all ages and levels. As players, they won State Championships at Pearl River Community College and since joining us in 2018 they have become much loved and vital members of our family.

As with all our coaches, Carl Reynolds takes the staff under his wing and spends countless hours helping to develop them all. Manny Gonzalez is the newest and youngest member of our current staff and assists Carl and our staff coaches in whatever way is needed.

Clifton Marshall who played at William Carey University is a leader with our Little Kickers and Pre-Academy program. "Cliffy' is a long-time military man and puts his organization and disciplined approach to good use with our youngest.

Carl's sister, Jade Reynolds, is a former player at the famous Arsenal FC in England. She played collegiately in the US at the University of Charleston SC. Jade heads up our successful girl's program.

One of the benefits of our Academy is the exciting help we get from our guest coaches. From Spain, Inaki Erana assists us by providing logistical help on our European tours and occasionally visits to work with our players here. Inaki is a former professional La Liga player at Sporting Gijon in Spain and a highly regarded coach in his country.

Terry Moore has been an annual visitor to The Oakes. It was Terry who helped to arrange our game with the Southampton FC Academy in England on our tour there. Terry is a former long-time staff coach at Southampton and coached many Premier League players in his time as well as coaching at Cardiff City in Wales. Terry is a former teammate of Nigel back in their native Wales.

Goalkeeper coach Jon Busch should need no introduction. Jon is a former US National team member and Goalkeeper MVP in the MLS. He has played for San Jose and the Chicago Fire and at the start of his career had a season with Tony Marriel as his 'keeper coach at the Worcester Wildfire near Boston, Mass. Jon has worked with our goalkeepers here at The Oakes.

Paul Martin needs no introduction to the Mississippi soccer scene. He has been a leading figure in spreading the love of the game around the south as well as coaching successfully at the youth and the collegiate level winning many State Championships. Paul is a great friend of Southern States Soccer and enjoys helping us reach out into the more rural communities looking for talented players. He has sent many our way.
