Panama City Beach, Fla. –  The Stars got back to winning ways Thursday night in Florida with a 1-0 victory over the Florida Roots. The Stars move to 5-3 in their inaugural season while the Roots are left struggling at the bottom of the divisional standings.

The score was a close 1-0 win but the Stars missed a number of good chances to put daylight between them and the home team and that will be a consideration for coach Carl Reynolds. The Stars were thankful to a Roots defender who sliced the ball into the net for an own goal, scoring on his own team. Before that Billy Boag and Atila Sepkin worked a short corner-kick to Julian Avila and it was his cross into the six-yard box that created the opening and forced the mistake from the defender. It wasn’t the first time the home team had been caught by a Stars short corner routine.

Despite having most of the play and creating a number of good opportunities the Stars failed to capitalize on their lead during the second period but thankfully the defense stood firm and reduced the Roots to long shots and hopeful crosses. The only threat that came from the Roots was when facing a few long throw-ins but the Stars handled most of them well enough.

The Stars come home to the Oakes on Saturday for a face-off with Tallahassee (1-2-3) who they defeated 3-0 on the road earlier this season.  The kick-off is at 7:30 pm.
